‘Same way you did,’ William told him silkily. ‘By crossing a palm with silver.’

Harley stomped behind a flimsy screen daubed with erotically entwined figures. Within a trice, peppered with expletives, he emerged, doing up his breeches. ‘What do you want?’

‘To talk to you.’ William’s tone was deceptively humouring.

‘I’ve paid for sport, not conversation.’ The bluster emerged from tight lips and with a slit-eyed threat for the languid woman on the bed he was soon sidling to the door in bare feet.

Benjamin Harley’s bombast soon withered once they were out in the cold musty corridor of Number 12 Brick Lane, where Violet plied her trade along with a number of other enterprising young women with nothing to lose but their looks and desperation.

The hostile scrutiny of two pairs of hooded eyes soon had Harley unwisely scraping his soles on rough timber. ‘I know why you are here and I had nothing to do with any of it.’ It was a querulous announcement issued while he hopped away from splinters. His colour heightened as William’s eyebrows rose quizzically.

Although they did not socialise in the same circles, Harley had thought he knew Pemberton. Here before him was not the placid chap he had carelessly pilloried, safe in the knowledge that the man was too nice to retaliate.
